Match Report: Stamford vs. Quorn, 5th Nov 2011

Stamford returned to winning ways at the Premier Kitchens Arena at the first time of asking. Tommy made four changes to the side that lost to Leek last week with Luke Garton, Bruno Holden and Nicholas Ghislanzoni going straight into the first eleven with Marcello Schiavone on the bench.

Quorn had a disastrous start after only four minutes gone they were reduced to ten men with Adam Burton receiving his marching orders, a long ball over the top saw Bruno Holden spin the defender and race away only for Holden to be brought down on the edge of the area the referee had no choice but to show the inevitable red card as Burton was the last man. The free kick was taken into the wall and cleared.

Stamford took the lead after eleven minutes Andy Toyne won the ball in midfield and played the ball out to the right wing to Nathan Watson, Watson sent over an inch perfect first time cross that was headed into the bottom corner by Bruno Holden for a debut goal.

Quorn were nearly level just moments later a corner was played over to find ex Daniels captain Chris Gray his header came back off the bar and was eventually scrambled away.

The lead was doubled after seventeen minutes a sublime run by Watson beat several defenders and cut into the penalty area his cross shot was spilled by the goalkeeper only to Ghislanzoni’s feet and the big striker blasted the ball home for his debut goal.

Quorn made an early change as their left back was struggling to cope with the pace and tenacity of Watson on the wing but this didn’t make any difference as the winger was having a fantastic half causing all sorts of problems.

Next to try his luck was Andy Toyne he picked the ball up some twenty-five yards out from goal and let fly the ball took a huge deflection and looked to have beaten the goalkeeper but he managed to just get a finger tip to the ball and pushed it over for a corner.

Stamford’s third came on thirty-seven minutes Watson causing some trouble again bursting into the box and a great tackle from a defender as he was about to shoot saw the ball ricochet out to David Staff his shot was turned round for a corner. Daniel Barrett took the corner deep and picked out Holden he nodded the ball down to Staff who smashed the ball home for three.

Quorn were handed a lifeline in time added on in the first half after a sloppy free kick was given away near the touchline, the ball was played over by Bradley Munn and Chris Gray rose the highest to flick the ball into the far corner of the net.

Stamford started the second half strongly and Andy Toyne had another long range effort that was on target until it took a deflection just wide of the goal. Barrett playing in a more advanced role was having a great game and a run down the wing and into the box saw his shot turned onto the post and out for a corner by the keeper.

Quorn reduced the arrears on fifty-three minutes when another needless free kick was given away on the edge of the area and Andrew Osei-Siribour unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner that left Ziccardi with no chance.

Marcello Schiavone was brought on with twenty minutes to go and he offered a different out let up front with pace and youthful exuberance and he was soon in the thick of the action with a run into the area causing problems for the Quorn defence but he just stumbled and lost the ball as he was getting ready to cross. Schiavone then set Holden away with a flick on from a Ziccardi kick but Holden’s shot somehow came off the keepers knee and safely away for a corner.

Stamford’s final chance of the match came from a corner and Miles Chamberlain found himself unmarked and his header was cleared off the line and away to safety.

Stamford enjoyed some good periods of nice passing football at time but the second half Quorn managed to cause some problems even with ten men but the Daniels managed to hold out for the win.
